Identity
The Christian Brothers are a religious congregation of laymen within the Catholic Church. Their focus is the education and care of
young people, whom they endeavour to lead to faith in Christ, to a sense of belonging to the Church and to the full development of their human potential. The Brothers live in community, praying together
and supporting and encouraging one another in their work for God.
The present thrust of the Congregation is towards the poor and those who are marginalised in society. The Brothers are an
international group, with involvement in some 26 countries. People other than Brothers also support the work of the Congregation as members of the Edmund Rice Family. Motivated by the highest of ideals,
the Brothers acknowledge their human faults and failings as well as their increasing average age.

Origin
The Christian Brothers began in Ireland in 1802. The Founder was a Catholic layman, Edmund Rice. He had been a prosperous merchant
whose wife had been killed in an accident, leaving him with a handicapped daughter. His compassion for the desperately poor people, especially the children, in the Ireland of his time led him to do what
he could to alleviate their misery. Charity on a part time basis did not satisfy him. He saw his way forward as a man devoted entirely to the work of providing an education for children that would
encourage rather than jeopardise their Catholic Faith. The magnetism of his personality was such that like-minded men joined him in his aspirations. From 1802, aged 40, he lived as a religious brother,
first following the way of life of the Presentation Sisters, suitably adapted. By 1820, the Pope had approved a rule of life devised specifically for his group of Brothers.

Around the World
When Edmund Rice died in 1844, the Brothers were established in England as well as in Ireland. They were also in Sydney for a few
years in the 1840s. For the first hundred years of expansion, it was mainly a story of the Irish Brothers following Irish emigrants to their new homes.
